The Story

From Dublin Finance to Independent Security Research

Séamus didn't start out writing about cybersecurity. He stumbled into it while solving real problems in payment systems, and never looked back.

2010 — The Beginning

Fresh out of UCC with a BSc in Computer Science, Séamus joined a Dublin financial services firm as a junior security analyst. The job wasn't glamorous — it was late nights debugging payment processing systems and writing vulnerability reports that nobody seemed to read. But that's where the real learning happened. He watched attacks happen in real time. Saw how a single misconfigured server could expose thousands of transactions. That changed everything.

2015 — Going Deeper

After finishing his MSc in Cybersecurity from Trinity College Dublin, Séamus couldn't stay in a corporate role. He needed to understand security at the hardware level — how firmware vulnerabilities work, what makes a laptop actually secure. So he went independent. Started consulting with tech companies, running penetration tests, digging into the stuff that most people never see.

2018 — Recognition

His research on laptop firmware vulnerabilities got published. Major manufacturers started reaching out. Three of them adopted his responsible disclosure protocols. It wasn't about fame — it was about proving that Irish security research could stand up to international scrutiny. That same year, he led Ireland's first regional fintech security awareness campaign. Not a PowerPoint presentation. Real training with real banks.

2021 — leighdotchin

Joined leighdotchin Limited as Senior Cybersecurity Editor. The role combined everything he'd learned — technical depth, teaching ability, and an Irish perspective on digital safety. He oversees all technology reviews and fintech content. But honestly, he still does the testing himself. Can't trust anyone else to do it properly.

What He Does

Deep Technical Knowledge. Real-World Testing. Clear Explanations.

Laptop Security Reviews

Tests hardware encryption, firmware vulnerabilities, physical security mechanisms. He's audited over 300 devices — knows where the weak points are before anyone else.

Fintech Security

Understands payment protocols, API vulnerabilities, and regulatory compliance across Irish and EU frameworks. Reviews fintech apps with penetration testing rigor.

Digital Safety Training

Translates complex security concepts into actionable advice. Can explain cryptography to your mum. Actually has. Works.

Infrastructure Auditing

Identifies vulnerabilities in network architecture, cloud configurations, and data storage systems. Responsible disclosure is non-negotiable.

Threat Assessment

Analyzes emerging threats with focus on Irish users and businesses. Keeps up with zero-day exploits, social engineering tactics, regulatory changes.

Cybersecurity Journalism

Writes with technical accuracy but human readability. His articles get shared because they're useful, not because they're sensational.

The Approach

Why Séamus Does What He Does

Security Shouldn't Be Scary

He's seen too many people give up on digital safety because they think it's too complicated. That's not acceptable. Security needs to be explained clearly — not dumbed down, but honest about what actually matters and what's hype. Most people don't need military-grade encryption for their email. But they do need to understand what they're protecting and why it matters.

Test Everything Yourself

He doesn't review products based on marketing materials or what other reviewers say. Every laptop gets audited. Every fintech app gets tested. Every security claim gets verified. That takes time. It's inefficient. It's also the only way to know if something's actually secure or just looks secure on the surface.

Irish Perspective Matters

Irish readers face different threats than Silicon Valley tech workers. Different regulations. Different banking systems. Different threat landscapes. His content isn't generic global tech advice — it's tailored to Irish users navigating Irish banks, Irish fintech apps, and Irish regulatory requirements.

Responsible Disclosure Always

Finding vulnerabilities is only half the job. The other half is working with companies to fix them before going public. He's seen zero-day exploits turned into responsible security improvements. That's the real impact — not headlines, but actual systems getting safer.

"Security shouldn't be a barrier to accessibility. It should be a foundation that lets people use technology confidently."

— Séamus O'Sullivan
